Hey All! This is Brian from the Striped Pig Stringband. I just stumbled across your site and saw that you had been kind enough to mention us! To clear up any misconceptions, we are simply just a bunch of guys who LOVE playing this music. We have been playing barn dances for several years now in Arcata, CA, our hometown. We definitely do not consider ourselves to be hillbillies or rednecks! We got the name from the story of the "striped pig muster," which you can google to learn more about. Basically, it was a way around prohibition laws, and is an interesting story. We have been fortunate to play with a lot of wonderful people who travel through the area, and many of these folks have played our local, monthly barn dance sponsored by HumboldtFolklifeSociety.org. Much of what you find on youtube, etc. is from several years back, and the band has changed and grown quite a bit since then. If you are ever in the area, look us up on the folklife website and come to a dance, we guarantee you will have a great time! Recent dances include the Portland Oldtime Gathering and this weekend, the San Francisco Bluegrass and Oldtime Festival! Hope to see you there! A new recording is in the works, as well as a website. Thanks and warmest regards, Brian
Brian, thanks for posting. Looking back at my comments from a year ago I would never say that now. I wrote that when I thought just my friends read this blog, much later I realized that others do too. I think your band is one of the best I've heard, up there with Foghorn for me. I'm looking forward to your new recordings.
Thanks Ben! I'll keep you posted as the new website goes up and all that. If you want to hear what we are sounding like these days, search for our version of "breaking up christmas" on youtube. Cheers and thanks for the nice words! Brian SPSB
